Wines, Valleys and a Taste of Old Japan

Just 25 minutes south of Matsumoto by train, Shiojiri City rests quietly between mountains and vineyards, where historic travel routes meet modern winemaking. It’s a town shaped by both history and harvest, where you can sip a crisp local vintage one moment and stroll a centuries-old street once walked by samurai and pilgrims the next.

Shiojiri is Nagano Prefecture’s leading wine region, with rows of vineyards spreading across the fertile plains around town. The combination of cool nights, abundant sunshine, and mineral-rich soil creates ideal conditions for growing elegant, delicately flavored wines. The area is especially known for Muscat Bailey A, a red grape variety native to Japan.

Local wineries such as Goichi, Alps Wine, and Izutsu welcome visitors with tours and tastings. Many within easy reach of Hirooka Station, just one stop before Shiojiri. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply curious, it’s a relaxed and scenic way to spend an afternoon, often with the growers themselves pouring your glass.

On the Historic Nakasendō trail

Shiojiri City also marks the northern gateway to the Kiso Valley and the historic Nakasendō trail, once one of the main routes connecting Kyoto and Edo. The town’s connection to this old highway can still be felt in its layout and atmosphere. Especially in places like Narai-juku, a beautifully preserved post town that lies within Shiojiri’s borders. The spirit of travel and tradition still lingers here even today.

Beyond wine and history, Shiojiri holds a deep-rooted tradition of woodworking, lacquerware, and handcrafts that have been passed down through generations. Local shops and roadside stalls still offer finely made goods alongside seasonal produce. Visit in late summer and you’ll find the whole region bursting with grapes, turning fields and markets alike a shade of purple and sweet.

Follow the trail through post towns, wander among the vines, or let your tastebuds guide the way. Shiojiri City is a relaxed, distinctly local detour that pairs perfectly with a day trip from Matsumoto.
