The Giant Butai Floats !
Date : July 24th – 25th
The Tenjin Festival is held on the same two days in July every year in honor of the Tenjin deity. The main event, 18 giant Butai wooden floats from different neighborhood districts of Matsumoto are paraded around town by groups of celebrants before assembling for display at Fukashi Shrine.
Beginning on the eve of the 24th, local people visit the shrine to pray to Tenjin, a deity of scholarship. The following morning, the large Butai floats begin wheeling their way through the streets of downtown before eventually being carried back to their respective communities by end of the day.
The Tenjin Festival tradition began some four centuries ago and most of the Butai floats are over 100 years old. Come be amazed by the intricate wooden carving and detailed ornaments on each float!
