Where Castles Once Stood and the Alps Still Watch
Tucked up on a low hill just north of downtown, Joyama Park is one of those places that quietly rewards the curious. It’s not the most famous stop in Matsumoto, and maybe that’s what makes it special. But head uphill, by bike or on foot, and you’ll find more than just peaceful greenery. This is a place layered with history and blessed with some of the best panoramic views in town.
Long before Matsumoto Castle claimed center stage, the original Fukashi Castle stood here. Built during the early days of the Sengoku period, it served as the stronghold that gave rise to Matsumoto’s identity. Though the structure is long gone, a modest marker still points to where the old keep once stood. Beneath the tall trees, you can sense the echoes of the past in the earth and stone around you.
Cherry Blossom Observation
Today, Joyama is a local favorite for strolls, cherry blossom picnics, and quiet moments above the city. The grounds are open and welcoming, dotted with benches and shaded corners. On clear days, the view stretches far beyond Matsumoto’s rooftops, across the wide plain of Azumino to the jagged ridgeline of the Northern Alps. At sunset, the mountains glow in soft hues of pink and gold, and it’s not uncommon to have the whole scene to yourself.
Getting there is simple. From Matsumoto Station, it’s a short ride or walk north and then a gentle climb up the slope. If you’re exploring the city by rental bike, this makes for an ideal detour with a big payoff. Check here for e-bike guided tour.
Joyama Park isn’t flashy. It doesn’t draw crowds or boast big attractions. But for those who take the time to visit, it offers a rare combination: quiet beauty, local connection, and a view that frames Matsumoto in all its natural surroundings.
