The Fruits of the Local Farmers’ Labor
Shiojiri City, Matsumoto’s neighbor to the south, is regarded by many as Nagano’s main grape-growing area. But did you know the first grapes brought to Shiojiri came from Matsumoto’s Sato Yamabe region? It’s not something we like to brag about, but in this fertile valley between downtown and the mile-high Utsukushi-ga-hara plateau grapes are grown in abundant variety. Showcasing these fruits of the local farmers’ labors is the Yamabe Winery.
More than just some nectar with a familiar name, the wines of Yamabe are a local product through and through. From the picking to the pressing straight through to the aging, the wines bearing the Yamabe label are the real home-grown deal, with tens of thousands of bottles produced and sold on the spot. Along with a wide selection of a variety of wines – with white Niagara and red Kyoho perhaps the most favored – the Yamabe Winery is also home to the “Mariage”. It’s an Italian restaurant that serves up an exceptional lunch to go with the exquisite view of Matsumoto and the mountains beyond.
Local Wine Tasting
In the warmer months you can grab a cone of the best grape soft-serve ice cream you’ll find anywhere. Circumstances permitting, there may also be bottles of wine set out for free self-serve wine tasting. If your senses aren’t satisfied by the time you leave it’s your own fault! Adjacent to the winery is the Yamabe Farmer’s Market, busy year-round bringing fruits and vegetables and a bounty of local products to the folks who arrive from all over Japan to sample the natural goodness of Nagano’s nurturing climate.
Located among the vineyards of the valley, the Yamabe Winery is a solid hour’s walk from downtown. While we think it’s worth the effort, we suggest getting hold of a bicycle. And pedaling up into this grape-laden slice of Matsumoto. Just keep in mind as you enjoy the fruits of the local farmers’ labors that cycling under the influence is illegal! So please, Yamabe Winery responsibly!
