To the Mighty God Yasaka
Date: July 14th
July 14 marks a special celebration in Matsumoto: the festival of the god Yasaka-sama, the guardian deity of Fukashi Shrine. This longstanding summer tradition draws many families, who come to pray for the happiness and health of their children.
Fukashi Shrine is one of the oldest and most significant shrines in Matsumoto, hosting two major festivals each year: the Yasaka-sama Festival and the Tenjin Festival.
The Yasaka-sama Festival is a deeply rooted in the city’s cultural calendar. It welcomes both locals and visitors to take part in a centuries-old ritual and offers a vibrant glimpse into the spirit of summer in Matsumoto.
A key feature of the festival is the offering of banners made from reed and paper. Children write on them with a calligraphy brush, inscribing “To the mighty God Yasaka” along with their name and age. These simple but heartfelt messages are then offered at the shrine in hopes of blessings for the year ahead.
Fukashi Shrine and Festivals
During the festival of the god Yasaka-sama, families across Matsumoto gather at Fukashi Shrine to take part in the festival. Children place their handmade banners in front of the shrine as a symbolic gesture of prayer and protection. The banners are sold at several shops throughout the city, especially in the streets surrounding Fukashi Shrine. They are only available on the day of the festival, which begins in the afternoon.
Although originally meant for children, the custom has grown over the years to include people of all ages. Participants purchase a colorful banner made up of five distinct colors. The name of the god, Yasaka-sama, is written boldly on the banner. On the left side, the person’s name and date of birth are added in smaller calligraphy. Once completed, the banner is carefully placed in front of the shrine, where a quiet prayer is offered.
To avoid the summer heat and enjoy the lively, nostalgic mood of a traditional Japanese “matsuri,” we recommend visiting later in the day. The festival grounds come alive in the evening with rows of food and drink stalls, along with small games and attractions for children. It’s a festive, family-friendly atmosphere that everyone can enjoy.
