Most visitors to Matsumoto head straight to the castle without exploring much further. While the castle is big part of our story and something of a must-see, there’s just as much to explore in the historic shopping precincts of Nawate Dori and Nakamachi along with the Ukiyo-e Art Museum and Matsumoto City Museum of Art and its celebrated collection of Kusama Yayoi – a Matsumoto-native and the world’s most successful living artist.
Craft an Itinerary That Suits Your Tastes
While here we’d also like to introduce you to our local Miso Brewery, one of the best in Japan and a great place to enjoy lunch; or why not visit a local sake brewery? After all Matsumoto and Nagano in general are known for producing some of Japan’s best miso and sake. In addition, experiences including our always popular samurai ‘katana’ sword fight workshops can also be enjoyed. It’s up to you!
We’ll create an itinerary based on your interests, our recommendations or a combination of both. Accompanied by a locally-based, English-speaking guide you will then explore the city with your guide enhancing all aspects of your visit through their knowledge of Matsumoto and in any way that is of assistance. Important information
- Please note that the stairs to reach the top of Matsumoto Castle’s tower are steep and narrow.
- The tour schedule will be agreed in advance. We reserve the right to modify the schedule in the event of unexpected venue closures, bad weather, etc.
- The tour may end earlier or later depending on the crowds at Matsumoto Castle especially during holiday periods and weekends.
- The lunch restaurant will be agreed prior to the tour.
- This is a walking tour therefore transport is not included. If you wish to use public transport during the tour, please pay for it directly on the day.
