Tattoo-Friendly Onsen and Sento in Matsumoto and Surrounding Region

For travelers with tattoos, finding a bathhouse (sento) or hot spring (onsen) in Japan that welcomes tattooed guests can sometimes be a challenge. While sento tend to be a bit more lenient, many still prohibit tattoos, and onsen often have strict policies against them. To help you enjoy a relaxing soak without any worries, we’ve compiled a short list of tattoo-friendly Onsen and Sento locations in Matsumoto and the surrounding Japanese Alps.

Tattoo-Friendly Onsen & Sento in Matsumoto 

HOT SPRINGS

Perhaps the most notable of Asama Onsen’s many hot springs is Biwa-no-Yu, founded in the latter part of the 17th Century. Public baths do not allow tattoos, but you can book a private bath for a more personal experience. Admission: 1,500 yen per hour per person.

While Biwa-no-Yu is hard to beat for its history, Asama’s most accessible onsen is Hot Plaza, located right across the street from the aptly-named Asama Onsen bus stop. Tattooed visitors are welcome in both indoor and outdoor communal baths. Admission: 680 yen per adult.

RYOKAN & HOTEL

Public baths do not allow tattoos, but you can book a private bath for a more personal experience when staying at the hotel.

Located 45 min drive from Matsumoto City, tattooed guests can use the private onsen available in the rental rooms.

Guests with tattoos can access the baths only if their tattoos are covered with a waterproof bandage (8 cm x 13 cm). These bandages are available at the hotel reception.
