For travelers with tattoos, finding a bathhouse (sento) or hot spring (onsen) in Japan that welcomes tattooed guests can sometimes be a challenge. While sento tend to be a bit more lenient, many still prohibit tattoos, and onsen often have strict policies against them. - Biwa-no-yu (Asama-Onsen)
Perhaps the most notable of Asama Onsen’s many hot springs is Biwa-no-Yu, founded in the latter part of the 17th Century. Public baths do not allow tattoos, but you can book a private bath for a more personal experience. Admission: 1,500 yen per hour per person.

While Biwa-no-Yu is hard to beat for its history, Asama’s most accessible onsen is Hot Plaza, located right across the street from the aptly-named Asama Onsen bus stop. Tattooed visitors are welcome in both indoor and outdoor communal baths. Admission: 680 yen per adult.

- Tamanoyu Hotel (Asama-Onsen)
Public baths do not allow tattoos, but you can book a private bath for a more personal experience when staying at the hotel.

Located 45 min drive from Matsumoto City, tattooed guests can use the private onsen available in the rental rooms.
