Rice Paddy ‘Tambo’ Art transforms a rice field into a living canvas

Rice paddy art – or ‘Tambo’ Art – is a unique Japanese art form that transforms a rice field into a living canvas. Instead of paint, artists use different varieties of rice that produce grains in varying colors: green, yellow, and purple. During the planting season, seedlings are placed in carefully arranged patterns. As the plants mature, the designs become more visible, shifting in color depending on the viewing time. Throughout the season, the ever changing artwork offers an unforgettable visual experience.

Rice Paddy Art in Azumino

In years past, you could view a stunning example of rice paddy art in Azumino, Nagano, just a 25-minute drive from Matsumoto. A tall wooden observation platform stood across the road from the rice field. Visitors climbed the 6-meter-high platform to take in the breathtaking panoramic view of the living masterpiece, crafted entirely from colorful rice plant.

How is it made?

The rice paddy “canvas” in Azumino covered approximately 9,000 square meters. The process began with the artist designing an image and creating a detailed planting diagram. Seven types of rice and grains were used to produce a range of natural colors. Planting started in early June, and by around July 20th, the image gradually came into view. As the rice swayed in the breeze, the vivid scene came to life giving visitors an impressive blend of nature and artistry.

On the way down from the viewing platform, visitors could view a photo display explaining each step of the creative process. Near the exit, a small souvenir booth offered rice-themed mementos and local goods.

What is nearby?

Azumino is a picturesque town with year-round sightseeing opportunities that attract thousands of visitors. Among its most popular attractions is the Daio Wasabi Farm, the largest wasabi farm in Japan. Here, you can see how wasabi is cultivated in crystal-clear spring water and capture stunning photos of the farm’s iconic watermill.

The farm is also known for its on-site restaurants and specialty shops. You can sample unique local treats such as wasabi soba or wasabi tempura. But also wasabi ice cream, wasabi beer, and even wasabi chocolate.
