Dream Coaster, Playgrounds and Zoo at Matsumoto Alps Park

Just a 15-minute drive from central Matsumoto, Alps Park is one of the city’s largest and highest-altitude parks, a perfect escape into nature for families. It’s an ideal spot to let your kids run free and burn off some energy in wide-open green spaces. The highlights are, without a doubt, the Dream Coaster, multiple playgrounds, and even a small zoo. All designed entertain visitors of all ages!

What is the “Dream Coaster”

The Dream Coaster is essentially a summer bobsleigh. It is a one-person sled on rails that winds its way down the hillside from the top of the park. You control your own speed with a handle (or just go full throttle!), as the track twists and turns through the trees, creating the thrill of a mini rollercoaster.

Take it easy the first time, then lean into the curves like a seasoned pilot, grinning all the way down. Once you’re home, don’t be surprised if your kids can’t stop talking about “that little car!” (Children 6 and under must ride together with an adult.)

After the Dream Coaster, enjoy the Playgrounds and the small petting Zoo

After the coaster ride, cool down with a classic kakigōri (shaved ice) or a scoop of ice cream. Then head over to the park’s small petting zoo. Kids can meet gentle animals up close, feed a pony through the fence, and even spot Japanese macaques, making for a fun and memorable animal encounter.

What makes Matsumoto Alps Park truly special is how easy and family-friendly it is. There’s plenty of free parking, stroller-friendly paths, and a wide variety of attractions to keep children entertained for hours. The expansive playground features a large roller slide, climbing structures, and open grassy fields, perfect for running, playing, and burning off extra energy before that inevitable car seat nap on the way home.

For a relaxed weekend outing that feels a world away from the city, yet is just minutes from downtown, Alps Park is hard to beat. And don’t forget to visit the observation tower, where you can take in a beautiful panoramic view of Matsumoto City.
