The JR East Welcome Rail Pass 2020 is only available for sale to residents of Japan holding a foreign passport. The pass is an excellent value at 12,000 JPY for adults and 6,000 JPY for children. Valid for 3-days of consecutive use, the pass covers unlimited travel on all JR East trains including most Shinkansen in the areas of Nagano, Tokyo, Tohoku, Niigata and more.

How To Visit Matsumoto by Train

  • From Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, take the Limited Express Azusa service to Matsumoto Station.
  • From other stations, take the Shinkansen to Nagano Station or Nagoya Station. Then transfer to the Limited Express Shinano or the Shinonoi Line services on to Matsumoto.

Most of these routes are accessible via a JR East Rail Pass including most JR East Shinkansen Lines (Tokaido lines excluded) and many included local and limited express services as well. Please check the map below:

  • Limited Sales Period: From October 16th, 2020 (Friday) until February 26th, 2021 (Friday)
  • Period of Use: From October 16th, 2020 (Friday) until February 28th, 2021 (Sunday)
  • Valid Period: 3 consecutive days of travel

How To Purchase Your Pass

Simply go to your nearest travel sales office listed below and present your original passport. The pass is only eligible for use by the passport holder who purchased the pass.

The pass can be purchased up to one month before its usage period begins. If you do not wish to begin using the pass on the same day of purchase, please be sure to request a later activation date at time of purchase. The date of activation cannot be changed after completing purchase.

  • Tokyo: JR East Travel Service Center – Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno, Shinigawa, Haneda Airport Terminal 3 and Narita Airport Terminal 1–2–3
  • Matsumoto: JR East Welcome Center – Matsumoto
  • Others: Travel Service Center – Nagano, Yokohama, Sendai, Morioka, Akita and Niigata

How To Use Your Pass

Present your pass to a station attendant or car conductor if requested. You must carry your original passport while using the pass. The pass is only available for 3 days from the starting date you requested when purchasing the pass.

If you wish to reserve a seat on the train, present the JR East Welcome Rail Pass at any JR East Travel Service Center, JR Ticket Office or Travel Service Center in any JR East Station within the area covered by the pass. You can also reserve a seat for Shinkansen and limited express trains at a Reserved Seat Ticket Vending Machine.

Important Informations

The JR East Welcome Rail Pass 2020 is only available for foreign nationals residing in Japan. The pass is not available for Japanese nationals (Japanese passport holders).

A child’s age on the date of purchase is used to issue the pass. You must prove your child’s age by presenting their passport. Children under the age of 6 do not require a pass, unless you want to reserve seats.
