When travelling to Matsumoto you will almost certainly be carrying luggage with you and may, for the sake of convenience, want to store it for a period of time. The easiest place to do so is at Matsumoto Station, where you will find five locations with lockers of varying size. Matsumoto Station is small and easy to navigate with all luggage storage lockers within a short distance of the ticket gates on the second floor of the station.
Arrival & Departure Area of Matsumoto Station / 2nd Floor
When arriving in Matsumoto by train and passing through the ticket gates, you will find yourself on the second floor of the station. Tourist Information and Japan Rail (JR) East Welcome Center are directly across from the ticket gates. When entering the Welcome Center you will see storage lockers to your left, decorated in Japan’s famous ‘ukiyo-e’ art style.
Alternatively, when passing through the ticket gates and into the station, go to your right and you will see ticket machines, the JR Ticket Office and waiting room. You will find more storage lockers inside the waiting room.

How to Use a Storage Locker
Many storage lockers in and around Matsumoto require payment using coins, so best to ensure you have enough on you at the time. If you need to break a banknote into coins, you will find a money exchange machine inside the waiting room on the second floor of Matsumoto Station.

Some luggage storage lockers can be paid for using an IC Card but we recommend also carrying some coins in case those lockers are already full.
There are four different sized lockers with daily charges of JPY400, JPY500, JPY700 and JPY1000 – with larger lockers costing more.

The usage period is calculated as 1 day from midnight / 12AM, with a maximum usage of 3 days. Items left more than 4 days will be removed and stored up to 30 days. If you lose the locker key or receipt, call the phone number listed on the lockers for assistance.
When using the lockers inside the JR East Welcome Center or waiting room on the second floor of Matsumoto Station, it is important to note that they can only be accessed during opening hours of 5:15AM to 11:30PM. If you need to access / collect your luggage outside of those hours, make sure to use lockers at one of the other locations listed above.
